LOCAL CULTURE AND HERITAGE

Visiting the ancient hill-top towns and villages nearby is like taking a step back in time. This is a very traditional area and the local people are very proud of their heritage.

Things here seem to have 'stood still' for centuries. This is reflected in the way of life and methods of farming.

Most of the farms produce lovely fruity Montepulciano d'Abruzzo wine, take their own olives to be pressed into fragrant, green olive oil and some still make Pecorino cheese using milk from their own small flock of sheep.

As you drive along the narrow winding roads you pass many small farmhouses where you can often see the old ladies (who are frequently dressed in black with headscarves even on the warmest day) busily preparing the vast lunch for all the family.

If you would like to try the local cuisine we can book dinner for you in a local 'Agriturismo' which is a restaurant in a local farm where 80% of the fare is provided from their land. The freshest seasonal produce cooked by the farmer's wife using traditional recipes ensures the food is delicious!

We can arrange trips to vineyards and the local olive press. (In the season for oil making)
